PCEC's mission is to protect the land, water, air, and wildlife and foster a resilient future for Yellowstone's Northern Gateway. 

 

Summary: 

Founded in 1989, the Park County Environmental Council (PCEC) serves as the local voice for the wild in the Northern Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem—one of North America’s most critical wildlife habitats and part of the largest intact temperate ecosystem left on Earth. Our work takes place on Indigenous lands, carrying forward a long tradition of caring for a landscape of global ecological importance.

Unique among conservation groups, we work across both public and private lands to safeguard contiguous habitat. For over three decades, PCEC has been our community's first line of defense—standing up to protect our land, air, water, and wildlife from industrial gold mines, oil and gas development, sprawling resorts, and other short-sighted developments.

Stopping threats, however, is only half the work. To ensure Yellowstone’s northern gateway remains wild and intact for generations to come, we must be proactive. We advocate for smart land-use policies while educating and inspiring the next generation of local leaders. Through these efforts, we create practical, on-the-ground solutions—like wildlife coexistence programs and the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act—to secure real, lasting protection from the Yellowstone River headwaters to the highest wilderness peaks in Montana.
